Education in Emergency Response – White Nile State
Education in Emergency Response – White Nile State
JASMAR Human Security Organization, in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE), implemented the Education in Emergency Response – White Nile State project in Kosti and Rabak localities. The project aimed to improve access to safe, inclusive, and protective learning environments for school-aged girls and boys, particularly displaced children and other vulnerable groups, while supporting continuity of education during emergencies.
Humanitarian Response
Conflict and displacement in Sudan increased educational needs among children in White Nile State, creating additional challenges in ensuring safe and inclusive learning opportunities for displaced children and host communities. In response, the project focused on improving educational infrastructure in targeted schools, establishing temporary learning spaces, strengthening teachers’ capacities to identify and refer protection concerns, and providing psychosocial support to children and parents. These interventions contributed to creating safer learning environments that better responded to the needs of children affected by the crisis.
Project Objective
The project aimed to improve access to safe, inclusive, and protective learning environments for school-aged girls and boys. It sought to achieve this by establishing semi-permanent learning spaces in targeted schools, strengthening teachers’ capacities in case identification and referral, providing psychosocial support services, and enhancing the ability of schools and local communities to respond to the educational and protection needs of children affected by conflict and displacement.
Key Achievements
• 10 semi-permanent learning spaces were constructed in 10 targeted schools across Kosti and Rabak localities, with five schools covered in each locality, supporting children's continued access to education in safer learning environments.
• 100 teachers were trained in case identification and referral, strengthening their knowledge and skills in child protection, referral mechanisms, and psychological first aid.
• 10 psychosocial support (PSS) sessions were conducted in targeted schools across Kosti and Rabak, reaching students and parents.
Impact on Beneficiaries
The project contributed to improving educational access for school-aged children by establishing 10 semi-permanent learning spaces in targeted schools and supporting continuity of education for children affected by conflict and displacement. Teacher training strengthened the capacity of school personnel to identify child protection concerns and respond through appropriate referral mechanisms. Meanwhile, psychosocial support sessions provided children and parents with opportunities to access support within the school environment. Overall, the project contributed to creating safer, more inclusive, and more responsive learning environments that addressed the educational, psychosocial, and protection needs of children in Kosti and Rabak localities.
