Integrated WASH and Education Support for Conflict-Affected Refugees
Integrated WASH and Education Support for Conflict-Affected Refugees
JASMAR Human Security Organization implemented the Integrated WASH and Education Support for Conflict-Affected Refugees in White Nile State project, with funding from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF). The project aimed to contribute to addressing the urgent basic needs of South Sudanese refugees by supporting access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and education services in Al Salam Locality.
The project combined school WASH improvements, hygiene promotion, vector control, education supplies, teacher capacity building, support for parent-teacher associations (PTAs), and the construction of semi-permanent learning spaces in targeted schools.
Key Achievements
1. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
• Conducted 16 hygiene promotion campaigns in targeted schools across refugee camps, covering handwashing, personal hygiene, and the prevention of open defecation.
• Implemented 16 vector control campaigns in targeted schools and surrounding areas, in coordination with the State Ministry of Health's Vector Control Department.
• Distributed 32 solid waste bins and related equipment to eight targeted schools and their surrounding areas.
• Installed eight water supply systems in targeted schools in collaboration with UNHCR, the Ministry of Health, the Water and Environmental Sanitation Department (WES), the Ministry of Education, and the Commission for Refugees (COR). Each system included a tap stand, a water tank, and a water network.
2. Education Support and Learning Environments
• Constructed eight semi-permanent learning spaces in targeted schools and provided basic equipment, including plastic mattresses, blackboards, and stationery.
• Distributed 10,000 school kits to students in targeted schools, including 9,000 kits for primary school students and 1,000 for intermediate school students.
• Distributed 50 school uniforms to children with disabilities, comprising 27 girls and 28 boys.
• Distributed 16 recreational kits to eight targeted schools in refugee camps in Al Salam Locality.
3. Teacher Training and Support
• Trained 96 teachers from targeted schools in pedagogy and leadership.
• Distributed 300 teacher kits to 300 teachers in 13 schools, including schools serving host communities in Al Salam Locality.
4. Community Engagement and Parent-Teacher Associations
• Provided capacity-building training to 120 Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) members on positive parenting, basic WASH principles in schools, and improving the school environment.
• Supported trained PTA members to conduct 64 community awareness sessions across the targeted camps, with eight sessions conducted for each targeted school.
Impact
The project contributed to improving access to education and essential WASH services for South Sudanese refugee children in Al Salam Locality. It supported safer and healthier school environments through improved water facilities, hygiene promotion, vector control, and solid waste management. It also strengthened learning conditions through the provision of school supplies, teacher support, recreational materials, and semi-permanent learning spaces. In addition, training for teachers and parent-teacher association members helped strengthen educational practices and community participation in improving school environments.
