Kassala – Wad Al-Helaiw: In a significant step towards strengthening youth protection and empowerment, maintenance and rehabilitation works at the Youth Club in Shagarab North Camp have been successfully completed. The initiative aims to provide a safe space for social, sports, and cultural activities while promoting youth engagement and community participation within the camp.
This achievement is part of ongoing efforts to protect and support refugees, asylum-seekers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs), under the Integrated Assistance Project covering health, nutrition, child protection, and gender-related issues. The project is funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and implemented in coordination with the Commission for Refugees (COR).
Maintenance works commenced in early September and were successfully completed in early October. The rehabilitation of the club represents a practical step towards revitalising its role as a community hub that nurtures young people’s potential and provides a safe, supportive environment for their initiatives and activities.
The club is expected to host a diverse range of social, sports, and cultural programmes, alongside awareness-raising activities addressing issues affecting young people. These initiatives will also help strengthen the role of youth in promoting awareness, peaceful coexistence, cooperation, and social cohesion within the camp.
Activities and programmes have already commenced at the club through the initiative and dedicated efforts of local community volunteers, who play a vital role in activating the space and organising meaningful activities. Their involvement highlights the importance of community participation in driving positive change and ensuring the sustainability of local initiatives.
The rehabilitation of the Youth Club at Shagarab North Camp represents a valuable contribution to community-based protection efforts. Beyond providing a venue for recreational and social activities, such spaces help foster a sense of safety and belonging, develop young people’s capacities, and create greater opportunities for their active participation in building a more cohesive and resilient community capable of addressing shared challenges.
