Protection and MPCA Emergency Response to Displacement and Famine

JASMAR Human Security Organization, in consortium with Plan International and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), implemented the Protection and Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) Emergency Response to Displacement and Famine project in White Nile State, Sudan.

Humanitarian Response

The project responded to growing humanitarian needs among displaced households and communities affected by displacement and food insecurity in White Nile State. The challenging humanitarian conditions increased the exposure of vulnerable groups, particularly children, women, and displaced families, to protection risks, while limiting their access to psychosocial support, healthcare, and essential assistance. These challenges highlighted the need to strengthen community-based protection services, expand community awareness, and build the capacity of community structures to identify protection risks, address them, and facilitate access to specialized services.

Project Objective

The project aimed to improve access to and benefit from strengthened community-based protection services through enhanced Case Management, Psychosocial Support, and targeted capacity-building for community structures and humanitarian workers, contributing to a more resilient and protective environment.

Key Achievements

• Referral and Case Management services were provided to 409 vulnerable individuals. Support included psychosocial assistance, medical referrals, and food assistance across Kosti, Rabak, and Al Jazera Aba localities.

• A total of 54 community awareness sessions were conducted on Child Protection, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and disease preparedness, equally distributed between Kosti and Rabak. In addition, 18 large-scale awareness-raising campaigns reached 8,213 individuals with protection and health messages.

• 54 Self-Healing Sessions were conducted, reaching 1,634 individuals, including 69 men, 100 women, 115 boys, and 1,350 girls, providing them with opportunities to access psychosocial support.

• 12 refresher training sessions were delivered to Community-Based Protection Networks (CBPNs), reaching 180 participants and strengthening their capacities in general protection, Child Protection, and GBV.

• A two-day PSEA workshop was conducted for humanitarian workers and case workers, reaching 20 participants. In addition, 12 PSEA orientation sessions reached 1,250 community members, while 1,500 Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials on PSEA and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) were distributed in Kosti and Rabak.

Project Impact

The project improved vulnerable individuals' access to protection services, psychosocial support, and referrals to specialized services. It also increased community awareness of Child Protection, GBV, health-related issues, and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA). Through targeted training and awareness activities, community-based protection networks and humanitarian workers strengthened their capacity to identify and respond to protection risks and ensure appropriate referrals. These efforts also reinforced accountability and contributed to creating safer, more informed, and protective community environments for vulnerable groups.
